How to live with a difficult roomate...

Any advice from anyone out there on how to live with a difficult roomate?  This roomate rarely helps with home improvement or cleaning  projects, throws clean laundry in the spare room unfolded, piles 50 pairs of shoes by the stairs (causing me to trip every morning) and does not share the computer and t.v. (and a whole list of additional fatal flaws). This person also stays up late talking loudly on the phone ( is there any insulation I can install to help me sleep?) and allows their alarm clock to go off for over an hour every morning.  I think some organization would greatly smooth over some of our issues. Where can I find great products at a reasonable price? (roomate is on a strict budget and won't spend much.)

Jillian tough question! Those roomate situations can be tough. I once had this Eastern European roomate and he about drove me mad. Similar situation to the one you are describing. The only way I was able to solve it was to make him stop reading GQ and drinking Russian Vodka.

Douglas, thanks for the suggestion. I actually mentioned these things to my roomate. However, he says that GQ is his bible and Russian Vodka is holy water. So in order to avoid a Religious war I must endure these rituals. Any other suggestions as to how I might tame this Barbarian...oops. I mean Bulgarian..

Jillian, that roomate of yours sounds like they are just looking for you to "TRAIN THEM " on your needs. I never have had a roomate other than my husband and I have always had the upper hand in my house, regadless of what he thinks. It always all about what he thinks and what I know, the secret to a happy living situation.

What's wrong with a few shoes near the door? I'm sure he knows right where they all are.

What is wrong with a few shoes at the door? Oh please. Shoes belong in the closet as you well know. Cease and desist your defense of such uncouth behavior. What are you? A Savage? What would your mother say?

I thought shoes belonged on a shoe rack?....or a good second alternative - near the door. Thin of this: maybe he wants to make sure the carpets stay clean AND not bring germs into the house.....leaving his shoes near the door is not an act of savage, but may simply be an act of devotion and sacrifice.

I lived in NYC for many years, at first with many roommates.

There is always going to be an issue, religious, higiene, etc...

I haven't had a roommate for many years, but my only solution was to just not have one.
