We just moved into a twenty year old house and none of the windows will open. Is there a secret on opening a window that is stuck?
Believe it or not, most people never open their windows, not even in the Spring and Fall. After painting the windows a few times, paint will seal the tracks. You couldn’t open the windows with dynamite. I’ve broken the wood frames trying to open some of mine.
You will need to break the bond the paint has made between the window frame and the track. A wide putty knife is the best tool for the task. Drive the knife flush against the window frame and down into the track. Go all the way around the inside of the window. If the window still will not open, take a short piece of wood and lay on top of the bottom sash next to the window lock. Take a rubber mallet and pound down on the lower sash gently, but firmly to try to break it loose. If you still cannot open it, the only thing left to do is remove the outside screen and start the process over from the outside. You should be able to pry the bottom sash up from the outside window sill. Once you free the window, try to remove any paint from the tracks. The last thing you will need is to spray the tracks with a “silicone spray” to lubricate the tracks.
